Mozambique — The Ombudsman, Isaque Chande, held an engagement meeting with the Mayor of Beira Municipality, Albano Karibe, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination between Ombudsman institutions and local authorities to safeguard citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms.
The Ombudsman emphasized that building a democratic society grounded in human dignity requires a clear understanding of the challenges faced by citizens and a commitment to resolving them in cooperation with public institutions. He noted that safeguarding fundamental rights remains one of the greatest responsibilities of the Ombudsman’s Office, as it is essential for fostering unity, equality, and shared citizenship.
Mr. Chande highlighted the importance of joint action, stressing that citizens must see their rights respected through coordinated work between government entities and oversight bodies. He underscored that full enjoyment of constitutional rights and the promotion of tolerance and statehood are cornerstones of a just society.
Mayor Albano Karibe welcomed the Ombudsman’s visit, stating that it represents an opportunity to strengthen institutional synergy, especially at a time when national efforts require the synchronized participation of all stakeholders to resolve issues affecting the population.
Ombudsman Begins Working Mission in Sofala Province
The Ombudsman is conducting a working visit to Sofala Province from November 18 to 21, focusing on the cities of Beira and the district of Buzi. The mission aims to assess access to and guarantees of justice, visit public institutions, and understand the alarming increase in femicide cases reported in the province.
In his first engagement, Mr. Chande met with the Governor of Sofala, Lourenço Bulha, to outline the objectives of his visit. He also announced that the Ombudsman’s Office is exploring the opening of a provincial delegation in Sofala to strengthen institutional presence and improve response mechanisms in the region.
Governor Bulha provided an overview of everyday challenges faced by citizens of Sofala and shared ongoing initiatives undertaken to advance good governance and uphold the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals. He expressed the provincial government’s commitment to collaborating with the Ombudsman’s Office to build a just and rights-respecting society.
