Disaster management does not end with emergency response — it requires sustained collaboration and oversight throughout post-disaster recovery. This was the core message from Indonesian Ombudsman Member Robert Na Endi Jaweng, following a meeting with Rustian, Principal Secretary of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), at Graha BNPB, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The meeting focused on strengthening coordination to ensure the fulfillment of rights and public service needs for disaster-affected communities in Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
“Disasters are a test case to see whether the state is present among the people,” said Robert, emphasizing the need to strengthen local government response capacity — from district and city levels down to villages — alongside active collaboration and preparedness in human resources, budgeting, and inter-agency networks.
