Azerbaijan and Montenegro Ombudsmen Strengthen Cooperation on Human Rights Protection
The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ms. Sabina Aliyeva, a Board Member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ombudsman Association (OICOA), held a bilateral meeting with the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, Mr. Siniša Bjeković.
During the meeting, Ms. Aliyeva provided a comprehensive overview of the Azerbaijani Ombudsman’s activities, highlighting the institution’s expanded mandate in areas such as anti-discrimination, equality, and the protection of the rights of children, migrants, and persons with disabilities.
She also emphasized the role of the Ombudsman Office as an independent monitoring mechanism and shared insights into the work of specialized monitoring groups established to ensure equality and prevent discrimination. Best practices and institutional approaches in these areas were also discussed.
Ms. Aliyeva expressed her appreciation to her Montenegrin counterpart for the support provided in safeguarding the rights of Azerbaijani citizens in relation to recent events in Montenegro.
Mr. Bjeković thanked Ms. Aliyeva for the warm reception and highlighted the strong potential for further strengthening cooperation between the two institutions.
Both sides engaged in a broad exchange of views on issues of mutual interest and explored opportunities for enhancing collaboration, knowledge sharing, and joint efforts in promoting human rights.
The meeting reflects Azerbaijan’s continued commitment to advancing international cooperation and strengthening human rights protection mechanisms, in line with OICOA’s mission to promote accountability, transparency, and the protection of fundamental rights.
