Azerbaijan Ombudsman Highlights the Importance of Strengthening Children’s Digital Safety

At a joint meeting of three committees of the Milli Majlis, Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Ms. Sabina Aliyeva highlighted concerns regarding the digital safety of children, citing findings from research conducted by the Ombudsman’s Office.

According to the research, interactive platforms and online games, which have become increasingly widespread among children in recent years, pose significant risks. Ms. Aliyeva noted that the formal nature of age restrictions on digital platforms intended for children’s use, the absence of effective control mechanisms, and shortcomings in the protection of personal data create conditions that may lead to violations of children’s rights.

Referring to the Ombudsman’s open appeal on the safety of children in the digital environment, Ms. Aliyeva noted that calls had been made to state agencies, media representatives, and parents to address existing challenges in this area.

She further emphasized that ensuring children’s digital safety requires strengthened oversight mechanisms for online platforms, legal risk assessments, and the implementation of preventive measures by relevant state institutions.

Ms. Aliyeva also underscored the important role of parents, noting the need for vigilance regarding children’s use of digital platforms, the establishment of open and trusting communication, awareness of potential online risks, and the implementation of parental control mechanisms.

The Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, a member institution of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ombudsman Association (OICOA), continues to advocate for the protection and promotion of children’s rights in evolving digital environments.
