Ombudsman of the Republic of Togolese Strengthens Gender Equality through Capacity-Building Workshop

The Ombudsman of the Republic of Togo, a member institution of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ombudsman Association (OICOA), organized a capacity-building workshop for its staff on 12 March 2026 at its headquarters, under the theme “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls.”

Held in commemoration of the International Day for the Rights of Women, the workshop aimed to strengthen awareness and understanding of gender equality and promote the empowerment of women within the institution.

The session featured rich discussions and interactive exchanges, focusing on key topics including mental health in the workplace and strategies for its preservation, sexual and reproductive health issues, and the balance between family and professional life, taking into account the specific realities faced by women within the institution.

In her remarks, the Ombudsman of the Republic, Protector of the Citizen, Ms. Awa NANA-Daboya, emphasized the institution’s responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness, non-discrimination, and justice. She stressed the importance of continuously strengthening the capacities of staff to effectively integrate a gender perspective into their daily work and interventions.

She further highlighted that gender equality is both a fundamental pillar of social justice and a practical imperative requiring concrete actions, collective responsibility, and sustained institutional commitment. She reaffirmed the institution’s ambition to position women as key actors in national development and to contribute to building a society where women and men work together in harmony for the progress of Togo.

The workshop was welcomed by key stakeholders, including Mr. Evalo Wiyao, First Rapporteur of the Office of the High Commissioner for Reconciliation and Strengthening of National Unity (HCRRUN), and Mr. Essohana Azoumaro, President of the Gender Focal Cell of the Ombudsman of the Republic. Both underscored that the promotion of gender equality can only be fully effective when public institutions actively integrate gender principles into their daily practices.

This initiative reflects the Ombudsman Institution’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive governance, strengthening institutional capacity, and advancing gender equality as a cornerstone of sustainable development and social justice.
